A boat goes down the Cayapas River leaving San Miguel, an Afro Ecuadorian community located 3 hours up the Cayapas River in Ecuador, on August 21, 2008. Many of the pueblos in the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, have become more dangerous in recent years because of the drug trade and it's proximity to the Colombian jungle. Fishing is the only job in some villages. A lack of opportunities has left many people frustrated, especially when there are less fish. Although many of these communities are living in extreme poverty, a strong sense of identity and family holds the people together and creates a positive and upbeat attitude.
